WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY — 8 NOVEMBER

Today, the world marks World Radiography Day, the anniversary of the discovery of the X-ray in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen.

This day recognizes the important role radiographers and radiologists play in healthcare. Through medical imaging, they help doctors see what is going on inside the body and make timely, accurate diagnoses.

X-rays help to detect:

Bone fractures
Tumours
Enlarged heart
Blood vessel blockages
Fluid in the lungs
Dislocated joints
Internal infections
Osteoporosis
Tooth decay
Foreign objects in the body

X-rays are non-invasive, painless and take only a few minutes, with results available almost immediately. Radiographers perform the tests, while radiologists analyse the results and share them with doctors. Other imaging methods such as CT scan, MRI, mammography, fluoroscopy and ultrasound are also used to diagnose health conditions.

Today, around 3.6 billion diagnostic tests using radiation in medical imaging are performed each year, and up to 80 percent of diagnostic problems are resolved with the help of X-rays.

On this day, WAELE AFRICA celebrates all radiographers and radiologists, especially women in radiography, for their dedication, professionalism and life-saving work. We also call for increased access to safe and quality radiography services for women and girls across Africa.

Thank you for helping us see, diagnose and heal.
