World Pharmacist Day — 25 September 💊
#WorldPharmacistDay
Today, the world celebrates World Pharmacist Day, a day to honor pharmacists and their vital role in improving health globally.
Pharmacists are much more than the person behind the counter who fills your prescription. They work long hours, often standing all day, ensuring medicines are safe, effective and used correctly. They provide advice on medications, administer immunizations, counsel patients, and many conduct research to discover and test new treatments. In every setting, pharmacists are the true medicine experts.
They carry immense responsibility in healthcare. They must know every type of medication, how it works, what forms it comes in, and how different medicines interact with each other to keep patients safe.
Did you know Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper and Ginger Ale were all invented by pharmacists? Famous pharmacists include Benjamin Franklin and Hubert Humphrey, and Alexander Fleming changed the world with his discovery of penicillin in 1928.
World Pharmacist Day was established by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 2009 in Istanbul, Turkey. The date 25 September was chosen because it marks the day FIP was founded in 1912. Each year the Federation sets a theme to help pharmacists showcase their work and educate the public.
At WAELE AFRICA Foundation, we celebrate and thank pharmacists across Africa and around the world for their dedication, knowledge and care. You are essential to healthy lives and stronger health systems.
Today, take a moment to thank your local pharmacist for all they do.
Happy World Pharmacist Day!
