World Financial Planning Day — First Wednesday in October
#WorldFinancialPlanningDay
Why Every African Woman Needs a Financial Plan
Today, the world marks World Financial Planning Day, held every first Wednesday in October. The day raises awareness about the importance of financial planning and gives financial planning experts around the world an opportunity to educate people on how to prepare for their financial future.
While a financial advisor helps manage money and investments, a financial planner goes further — helping individuals and businesses create and achieve long-term financial goals. They offer guidance on where to start, how to manage time and resources, and provide expert support on investments, insurance, taxes, retirement and reducing financial risk.
At WAELE AFRICA Foundation, we believe financial planning is not a luxury, it is a lifeline for women, especially African women.
Why it matters for women in Africa:
1. From survival to security: Many African women run small businesses, markets and farms but live day-to-day without savings or safety nets. Financial planning teaches how to save, budget and reinvest, turning little income into lasting security.
2. Breaking dependency: When a woman plans her finances, she gains power to make choices — to educate her children, leave an abusive relationship, own property, and build wealth in her own name.
3. Protecting families and futures: Financial planning helps women prepare for school fees, health emergencies, retirement and unexpected challenges like widowhood or job loss.
4. Growing businesses: With knowledge of investment, credit and tax, women entrepreneurs can move from informal trading to sustainable, bankable businesses.
5. Closing the wealth gap: African women face barriers to banking, land and inheritance. Financial literacy and planning give them tools to navigate these systems, access pro bono clinics, seminars and digital financial tools.
First observed on 4 October 2017 by the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) in partnership with IOSCO during World Investor Week, this day is now marked in countries including South Africa, Australia, Germany, Malaysia, UK and USA through free clinics, webinars, workshops and awareness campaigns.
Today, we call on African women to take one step: learn your numbers, set a goal, start saving, ask for advice. Your financial future is your freedom.
A financially empowered woman empowers a nation.
