Upholding Life and Dignity: Ending Femicide Across Africa Together
Across Africa, femicide remains a serious challenge. Femicide is the killing of women and girls because of their gender. Many cases occur in the home and are linked to intimate partner violence, domestic abuse, sexual violence, and harmful traditional practices.
The impact is wide. Families are broken. Communities lose mothers, daughters, sisters, and leaders. When justice is delayed or denied, it deepens fear and silence.

1. Trust warning signs: Threats, controlling behavior, isolation, and escalating violence should be taken seriously.
2. Have a safety plan: Identify safe people to contact, keep important documents and emergency numbers in a secure place, and know where to go if you need to leave quickly.
3. Seek support early: Reach out to trusted family, friends, faith leaders, health workers, or local support organizations. You do not have to face it alone.
4. Know your rights and services: Use police, legal aid, shelters, and health services where available. Report threats and incidents and keep records.
5. Stay connected: Isolation increases risk. Maintain contact with at least one person you trust who can check on you.
Key priorities for communities and institutions:
1. Prevention: Challenge harmful norms that justify violence. Promote gender equality through education and community dialogue.
2. Protection: Strengthen laws, enforcement, and support services including shelters, hotlines, and health care for survivors.
3. Justice: Ensure timely investigations and prosecutions. End impunity for perpetrators.
4. Data: Improve the collection and reporting of cases so governments and organizations can respond effectively.
African governments, traditional leaders, civil society, and communities all have a role. Protecting the lives and dignity of women and girls is essential for peace, development, and the future of the continent.
