Mozambique Independence Day, 25 June _Dia da Independência Nacional
Today Mozambique celebrates 50 years of independence. On 25 June 1975, the country raised its flag as a free nation after centuries of Portuguese rule.
WAELE AFRICA Foundation congratulates the people of Mozambique on this milestone. We wish you continued peace, prosperity, and happiness as you build the next chapter of your nation.
A brief history 1. Portuguese arrival: Europeans first reached Mozambique’s coast in the late 1400s with Vasco da Gama. By 1530, Portugal had established strong control over the territory. 2. Path to freedom: While much of Africa was gaining independence mid-1900s, Mozambique remained a Portuguese overseas territory. In 1962, anti-colonial groups united to form FRELIMO — the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique. 3. The struggle: FRELIMO launched an armed campaign in September 1964. Along with movements in Angola and Guinea-Bissau, this sparked the Portuguese Colonial War, which lasted almost 10 years. 4. Independence: A democratic revolution in Portugal in 1974 changed the course. FRELIMO took control of Maputo, the capital, in April 1974. Just over a year later, on 25 June 1975, Mozambique’s independence was officially declared.
What it means today Independence Day is more than a date. It honors the courage of those who fought, the resilience of those who rebuilt, and the spirit of Mozambicans shaping their future. From Maputo to Nampula, Pemba to Beira, the day is marked with pride, reflection, and hope.
Parabéns, Moçambique! Here’s to 50 years of freedom and to the generations ahead.
