International Widows’ Day, 23 June
Today we pause to see the women who are often unseen.
Why this day matters
There are over 258 million widows worldwide. After losing a partner, many face a second loss: their rights, home, income, and dignity. In too many places, widows are denied inheritance, have property taken, face stigma, or are cut off from bank accounts and pensions. Conflict, displacement, and health crises are creating new widows every day. Their struggles need attention, not silence.
The reality for many widows
1. Poverty: Without a spouse’s income or access to pensions, older widows and single mothers often fall into extreme poverty. Nearly 1 in 10 widows live in extreme poverty.
2. Violence & stigma: Some face harmful mourning practices, accusations, or discrimination. They are wrongly seen as “carriers” of bad luck or disease.
3. Loss of property: Land and homes meant for them and their children are grabbed by relatives, leaving families homeless.
4. Conflict: In war and displacement, women become widows overnight and are left to rebuild alone, often without legal protection.
What progress looks like
International Widows’ Day was set by the UN on 23 June 2011 to bring their voices forward. Real change means:
- Rights protected: Fair access to inheritance, land, pensions, and bank accounts — not tied only to marital status.
- Safety & respect: Ending harmful traditions and violence. Widows and children deserve security.
- Opportunity: Decent work, equal pay, and education so they can support their families.
- A seat at the table: Including widows in decisions about peace, recovery, and community rebuilding.
What we can do today
1. Listen: Learn about the widows in your community. Their stories matter.
2. Speak up: Challenge stigma and practices that shame or exclude them.
3. Support: Back laws and organizations that protect widows’ rights to property, income, and justice.
Widowhood is a loss no one chooses. But isolation and injustice are choices we can change.
Today, let’s stand with widows. See them. Hear them. Uphold their rights and dignity.
