Today, 11 October, the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child — a day to bring awareness and solutions to the unique challenges girls face every day, and to celebrate their power, potential and promise.
From the moment she is born, a girl can grow up to be a scientist, author, business leader, mother, teacher, president — anything she chooses to be. But that dream depends on us giving her healthy options, quality education, and the resources to make her own choices. Depending on where she lives, her challenges are different — child marriage, lack of schooling, period poverty, gender-based violence, digital exclusion, limited mentorship.
The call of this day started from the historic World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, where nearly 30,000 people from about 200 countries came together to advance women's rights. Because of continued global advocacy, in 2011 the United Nations declared 11 October as International Day of the Girl Child to encourage increased activism for girls.
At WAELE AFRICA Foundation, every day is Day of the Girl. We believe when you invest in a girl, you transform a generation.
An educated girl delays marriage, earns higher income, raises healthier children, and lifts her community. An empowered girl becomes a woman who leads.
Today, we call on everyone — families, schools, leaders, communities — to:
Listen to girls' aspirations
Protect their rights and safety
Educate and equip them with skills
Mentor and open doors for them
To every African girl reading this: Your voice matters. Your dreams are valid. Your future is bright. The world needs what only you can bring.
