International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations

Why dialogue matters now

Our world is facing interconnected crises — gaps in peace, development, trust, and governance. Instability is rising and humanity stands at a crossroads. In moments like this, solidarity, dialogue, and cooperation aren’t optional. They’re urgent.

Dialogue among civilizations is the most powerful tool we have to break down prejudice, build mutual understanding, and strengthen ties between nations. It reminds us that despite our differences, we share universal values and a common future.

What “civilization” means

The word “civilization” can be misunderstood. UNESCO describes it as universal, pluralistic, and non-hierarchical. Civilizations are shaped by exchange and interaction, yet each keeps its unique identity. No single culture owns progress — every achievement belongs to the collective heritage of humankind.

The power of conversation

Dialogue does three things at once:

1. Builds awareness of the values we all share — dignity, justice, respect, compassion

2. Creates bridges so we can find common ground on today’s toughest challenges

3. Fuels peace and progress by replacing fear and ignorance with understanding

As Miguel Ángel Moratinos, UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, put it: _“International conflicts cannot be the sole consequence of religion, culture or civilizations. There is no clash of civilizations. There is a clash of interests and a clash of ignorance.”_

What this day calls us to do

The International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations is a reminder to:

- Respect diversity instead of fearing it

- Listen first to understand, not just to reply

- Reject stereotypes that divide communities and nations

- Cooperate on peace, development, human welfare, and shared progress

The UN General Assembly adopted this observance through resolution A/RES/78/286, proposed by China and co-sponsored by over 80 countries. It reaffirms that dialogue is essential for maintaining global peace and advancing the values in the UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Your role in the conversation

Dialogue starts with all of us — in homes, schools, workplaces, and online. Ask questions. Share stories. Learn about traditions different from your own. Challenge misinformation. Choose understanding over division.

Because a more harmonious, interconnected world isn’t built by accident. It’s built through conversation.
