Today, 9 July, South Sudan marks its National Day. On 9 July 2011, South Sudan became the 54th independent country in Africa and the 193rd member state of the United Nations.

A brief history
1. Path to autonomy: After decades of conflict, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005 restored autonomy to Southern Sudan with the formation of the Autonomous Government of Southern Sudan.
2. The vote: In January 2011, citizens voted overwhelmingly for independence, with 98.83% choosing to break away from the Republic of Sudan.
3. Independence: At midnight on 9 July 2011, the Republic of South Sudan was born, becoming the world’s youngest nation with widespread recognition.
Independence Day is a moment to honor South Sudan’s resilience, reflect on the journey so far, and look ahead with hope for unity, peace, and progress.
