A brief history
Somalia is located on the Horn of Africa and has long been an important centre for commerce along the Arabian Sea. After periods of colonial administration in the late 19th and 20th centuries, Somalia achieved independence and united as the Somali Republic on 1 July 1960, with Mogadishu as the capital.
