Female genital mutilation (FGM) is an age-long tradition dated back to the days of our forefathers in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. FMG as it is referred to, involve the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. In countries where female circumcision is relatively common, certain health benefits have been pointed out by the practitioners and among others which include; a lower risk of vaginal cancer, fewer infections from microbes gathering under the hood of the clitoris and protection against herpes and genital ulcers.
Despite the negativity associated with the practice and warnings from government and international agencies like the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), FGM still persists as reported in Kaya, a village of about 60 miles from Ouagadougou, the Burkina Faso capital this September. GlobalNewsClock (GNC) reported that about 50 girls are being treated in hospital in Burkina Faso after botched female genital mutilation (FGM) after the Minister of Women Affairs Laurence Marshall IIbuoudo's confirmation.
