As the acclaimed giant of Africa, Nigeria, women are forces to be reckoned with. They have played their roles in Nigeria from time immemorial and contribute positively and make good impact in whatever responsibilities assigned to them. You talk of Queen Amina of Zaria, Mrs Olufunmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Mrs Margaret Ekpo, Moremi Ajasoro of Ile-Ife, Professor Dora Akunyili, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala among others.

Unlike countries like Botswana, Uganda, South Africa, Rwanda and Ethiopia where women are given more responsibilities, Nigerian women are only sure of the Women Affairs Ministry because successive Nigerian governments have always found it difficult to give them ‘powerful’ ministries.

In fairness to the administrations of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan to the incumbent Muhammadu Buhari, women have held strategic positions and they performed excellently well. But as Nigeria journeys into the 9th Republic and into Buhari’s second term, what ministries should be assigned to women for Nigeria to come out of his economic doldrums and compete with the so-called ‘small’ African countries?
